From Custody to Community - come and join the conversation

What is it?From Custody to Community slider picture linking to details of event

From Custody to Community is a virtual conference. It brings key partners together to discuss strategies for embedding the UK government’s female offender strategy in the Leicestershire Police force area.

Who is making it happen?

From Custody to Community is organised by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) for Leicestershire, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR) in partnership with HM Prison and Probation Service. The virtual conference will open with a scene setting overview from the Police & Crime Commissioner, Lord Willy Bach, and close with a summarising contribution by The Baroness Jean Corston, author of the seminal review of vulnerable women in the UK criminal justice system published in the aftermath of the tragic death of six women in Styal prison in 2006.

Why are we doing it?

The OPCC and HMPPS believe that partnership working is a powerful way of preventing harm by influencing and delivering positive change for vulnerable women, their families and the wider community.

Where and when will it take place?

Because of COVID-19 restrictions, the event will take place online using the widely accessible Microsoft Teams video conferencing platform on Wednesday 4 November 2020 between 09:30 and 14:30.

How will it work and what will we talk about?

The conference will facilitate an open and frank assessment of the bigger picture around female offending, its causes, and its impact on society. The conversation will be shaped by expert contributions from womens’ centres, academic researchers, the police and a series of compelling ‘lived experiences’ from ex-offenders.  Specific attention will be given to the role of trauma and adverse childhood experience in shaping offender behaviour. The event will discuss next steps and shape priorities for work in LLR. Participants will be invited to add their names to a formal pledge, committing all parties to work in partnership to secure better and more sustainable outcomes for female offender - supporting their journey from custody to community.

Who should attend?

Anyone who works with women and their families and is interested either professionally or personally in implementing positive change and reducing female offending in LLR.
