New panel places volunteers at the heart of crime prevention and community safety work

Those who give their time as volunteers for community projects or organisations are being sought to become part of a new advisory panel which will influence the way policing is delivered in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Police and Crime Commissioner for Leicestershire, Sir Clive Loader, is appealing for people or groups with an interest or previous experience in volunteering to become a member of a special forum to provide valuable feedback about the work they undertake and to shape and influence future crime prevention or community safety initiatives.

In his first Police and Crime Plan, Sir Clive has made it clear that volunteers and other partners are an integral part of his strategy to make Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland a safer place to live and work.

The Volunteer Forum is one of a host of new consultation panels Sir Clive is creating as part of his commitment to listen to the views of the public and develop closer relationships with communities.

He said: “Volunteers already play a hugely important role in protecting the public, either directly or indirectly, and I am determined that their valuable contribution to crime prevention and community safety will only grow as we move forward,” he said.

“These people give up precious free time to help our communities feel safer and more confident and bring fresh ideas and solutions. They often have a unique perspective on crime reduction.

“The new volunteering forum will champion the interests of unpaid support workers and allow them to use their experiences and ideas to influence the policing and crime agenda.”
