Triage Car Briefing highlights policing and health innovation across Leicestershire

Sir Clive Loader, Leicestershire's Police and Crime Commissioner, recently attended the Leicestershire Street Triage Car Briefing at Leicester Football Club's King Power Stadium.

Since January, Leicestershire Police, Leicestershire Partnership Trust and Leicestershire and Rutland Probation Trust have worked together on a innovative project with the aim of improving the service to people who may be experiencing difficulties with their mental health or learning disability and who come into contact with the Criminal Justice system. The Triage Car sees mental health nurses accompany police officers to incidents where it is believed someone may need immediate mental health support.

The scheme helps people with mental health problems who are sometimes detained in the wrong environment, and helps to make sure people receive the treatment they need. It can also reduce demands on valuable police time.

The Briefing event was extremely well attended, with colleagues from police forces and NHS organisations across the country travelling to Leicester to hear about the aims of the project, the experiences of those involved in delivering the scheme including officers and nurses, and those who have directly experienced the support of mental health provision.

The Triage Car supports Sir Clive's vision of Leicestershire Police being amongst the most effective police service in the country and clearly supports the aims of the newly refreshed Police and Crime Plan, which contains a clear focus on nurturing safer communities and the protection of vulnerable people.
