New police building unveiled by Leicester sports star

The Police and Crime Commissioner, Sir Clive Loader, welcomes the Leicester Rider’s player, Jamell Anderson, to Loughborough to officially open the new police building on Monday 23 February 2015.

The new building was built on the car park at the rear of the old station which was then knocked down.  It provides a modern and cost effective location for local police officers to use in the heart of Loughborough.  It opened in May 2014 and at the same time the front counter service moved to the offices of Charnwood Borough Council to provide Leicestershire’s first shared service.

At 1pm on Monday 23 February Jamell Anderson, will officially unveil a plaque in the front entrance of the new building.  He will be joined by Sir Clive Loader and the Chief Constable, Simon Cole QPM.  There will also be invited guests from Loughborough College, the Leicester Riders and Charnwood Borough Council amongst others.

Jamell, has strong links with Loughborough having just graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Applied Sports Science with Management from Loughborough College. The four-time British Basketball League title and two-time Cup winnerhas played for the Leicester Riders Basketball Club for four seasons and has represented Great Britain and England at a senior level.  The Riders are currently playing all their BBL home games at Loughborough University for the 2014/15 season ahead of moving into a new venue for the 2015/16 season.

The Leicester Riders also have links with the police through their, ‘Shoot 2 the Future,’ project which is a partnership between the Leicester Riders, Leicestershire Police and the Mile2 Project to engage young people between the ages of 14 and 25 in the game of basketball, providing a positive activity on a Friday evening. The sessions now engage more than 100 young people a week.

Sir Clive Loader, who oversees the Force’s building and investment strategy, said: “It’s great to see that police officers are now working from a smart, modern and cost effective building in the heart of Loughborough.

“As part of the savings programme, I am keen to see as many of the old, and often oversized, police stations being replaced with these smaller hubs that are much better value for money.”

Chief Constable, Simon Cole, said; “The Leicester Riders have a thriving community programme and contribute to keeping our communities safer, and reducing crime and anti-social behaviour, by giving up their time to run activities, events and educational workshops for young people so I am really pleased that Jamell is able to officially open our newest building.  It provides a smart, modern and cost effective base for local police officers to use in the heart of Loughborough.  I am really looking forward to meeting Jamell who is an excellent role model and has studied and played basketball in the town.   It’s also been a while since I met someone taller than me!”

Loughborough College Chief Executive Esme Winch said; “From the moment Jamell joined Loughborough College he has been a leading light on and off the court. The commitment he has shown to the community, to his studies and his sport is inspirational. Jamell blazes a trail for our other degree students and for all the young people he works with and who watch him play. We are delighted he is officially opening the new police building in Loughborough.”
