PCC welcomes police funding reform

Leicestershire’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) welcomes the news that the Home Office plans to reform the current system used to allocate central government funding to the 43 police forces in England and Wales.

The Home Office is responsible for allocating central funding to each PCC who then decides how much of this budget the force receives and how much is given to other crime reduction initiatives. Funding is also received locally from council tax precepts.

In an announcement today (21 July) Policing Minister Mike Penning launched a consultation on the new proposals, which would allow funding to be divided fairly between PCCs.

PCC Sir Clive Loader said: "We welcome this overhaul as we have long argued that the formula used to allocate central grants to police forces disadvantages Leicestershire and that we do not get our fair share of the financial cake.”

The current formula divides police workload into different categories including crime, fear of crime, population and policing special events but has been referred to by the Policing Minister as outdated.

He said: “The current model for allocating police funding is complex, opaque and out of date. This consultation sets out proposals to deliver a police funding model for the future which is fair, robust and transparent.”
