Responding to today’s announcement from the Home Office on provisional financial allocations for police forces, Sir Clive Loader, Police and Crime Commissioner for Leicestershire said:

“Today’s announcement is most welcome, although not entirely without financial implications to our budget.  It is certainly much better than we expected earlier in the year, albeit the much vaunted protection of police spending (announced in the recent Spending Review) is predicated on local taxpayers contributing an additional 2% through an increase to their council tax contributions.

“I am today launching a consultation with local taxpayers to evaluate their appetite for this proposal and I hope that people will take the opportunity to have their say on the matter.

“Overall, there is a degree of relief that the position is not worse, but we need to look very carefully at the detail before preparing our budgets for the coming year.  It would be premature to make any further definitive statements at this stage.”
