The nomination deadline for the Leicester Mercury’s Pride of Leicestershire Awards is today at midnight.

The awards provide an opportunity to celebrate Leicestershire’s unsung heroes, those who go the extra mile and make a real difference in their communities.

Police and Crime Commissioner Sir Clive Loader is sponsoring the overall awards, whilst Leicestershire Police is supporting one of eight separate awards categories, namely the Bravery and Courage award.

The other categories are: Community Action, Community Building, Good Neighbour, Emergency Services, Armed Services, Overcoming Illness or Disability and Volunteer of the Year.

So far around 140 submissions have been received for the different award categories.

The closing date for entries is May 19 with the winners being announced at a special awards ceremony being held on July 23.

Sir Clive would like to encourage members of the public to nominate the special people of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and hopes that their stories will inspire others to also give back too.

He said: "The awards are a celebration of those people who go the extra mile. But I also like to see them as an encouragement to others to follow the example of these special people in the future.

"If I look at the categories, there is barely one which does not apply to what I am trying to do with the  Police and Crime Plan.

"I, and all of the officers at Leicestershire Police, want to make our communities safer and to protect the vulnerable.

"We have many good examples of people who are helping us do that already and I want others to see that they can also play a part in making life better for everyone in Leicestershire and Rutland."

Speaking about the Bravery and Courage award, Chief Constable of Leicestershire Police Simon Cole said: “It is an honour for the Force to be able to support an award which recognises the great lengths people will go to in order to help and support others in need.

“I hope that this award will attract many nominations, for people who show acts of bravery and courage in their jobs and everyday life, through to those that acted on impulse to help or save the life of another.

“In my role I frequently get to hear about those that go above and beyond and during my recent annual awards ceremony I was able to acknowledge the brilliant work of two members of the public who fought to pull a man from his burning car. It is this type of selfless response that I am keen to see nominated and I am very much looking forward to helping to select a winner.”
