Low Cost Interventions
15. Retail Radio Schemes
A retail radio scheme provides businesses with handheld radios that connect you directly to other local retailers, security teams, and sometimes local authorities. It allows for instant communication to share information about suspicious behaviour, incidents, or individuals in real time.
For business owners, this offers a quick and effective way to stay informed and respond to potential threats as they happen. It can help prevent crime by alerting others to known offenders, improve staff safety through fast communication, and strengthen partnerships between local businesses, creating a more coordinated approach to tackling crime in your area.
Low to None. These are often run by BIDs or local councils and joining is often free or part of membership of a BID.
Short-term/Ongoing. Costs are usually addressed by the BID or local authority running the scheme.
Medium/High - these are often maintained by the BID or local council so no direct cost to retailers.
Why Joining DISC or Similar Schemes Facilitates Fast Incident Response and Communication Between Businesses
- Centralised Platform for Real-Time Alerts
- Businesses receive instant notifications of ongoing incidents, such as thefts, aggression, or suspicious activity.
- These alerts help neighbouring stores respond quickly, increasing the chances of deterring or intercepting offenders.
- Instant Messaging and Shared Updates
- Members can communicate directly via the platform, sharing updates on offender movements or evolving incidents.
- This fosters a collaborative environment, where information flows between retailers without delays or misinterpretation.
- Incident Reporting and Escalation Tools
- Staff can log and report incidents within minutes, complete with details and media files.
- Reports can be escalated to police or local crime partnerships to ensure timely support and intervention.
- Linked Intelligence Across Locations
- Information about offenders or methods is connected across businesses, enabling identification of patterns and repeat offenders.
- Retailers benefit from shared insights on emerging risks, hotspots, and coordinated prevention strategies.
- Supports Coordinated Responses and Risk Mitigation
- Alerts prompt nearby businesses to take protective measures (e.g. locking entrances, increasing staff presence).
- Shared intelligence strengthens collective response and reduces the impact of criminal activity.
Limitations
| Limitations | Explanation |
| Requires active engagement | Fast response depends on regular use and prompt reporting by members. |
| Technical reliability | Connectivity or system issues could delay information sharing. |
| Information overload | Too many alerts or messages may cause important updates to be missed. |
Best Practice
- Ensure staff are trained to respond swiftly to alerts and contribute relevant updates.
- Set clear protocols for action when alerts are received to avoid confusion.
- Use the platform consistently to maintain strong situational awareness.
Participate in briefings or local crime group chats to reinforce collaboration.
