2. Vehicle-related Theft
Vehicle related theft refers to vehicles parked both on your property and in your local area such as on streets and in local carparks.
You need to be particularly careful in the evenings and at night as this is when 80% of vehicle-related thefts occur.
Security Measures
Everyday Vehicle Security
- Ensure vehicles are locked even for short periods of time
- Never leave the car unattended or running, even briefly
- Ensure valuables are removed from the vehicle
- Avoid leaving clues that suggest electronics are inside (e.g. Sat Nav mounts, wires, suction marks)
- Store car ownership documents at home, not in the vehicle
- Keep vehicle keys and spares well away from the car when at home
- Keep vehicle keys in a signal-blocking Faraday pouch
Physical Security Enhancements
- Install visible locks such as a steering lock or wheel clamp
- Install locking nuts on alloy wheels
- Secure your number plate with one-way security screws
- Secure external items (roof racks, tailgate racks, top boxes, tool chests) with cable locks, padlocks, or self-locking chests
- Park to restrict access to the underside of your car to deter catalytic converter theft
- Fit a tilt alarm to protect against catalytic converter theft
- Fit a catalytic converter shield to the bottom of your car
Electronic & Alarm Systems
- Fit a car alarm and immobiliser if not already installed
- Ensure your car alarm is 'Thatcham-approved' (may reduce insurance premiums)
Smart Practices & Reduction
- Reprogramme keys if you buy a second-hand car
- Check for cloning - ensure stolen plates haven’t been placed on your car
- If you have tools, mark them clearly and bring them inside at night
Parking Safety
- Park in well-lit, busy areas
- If using a car park, choose one that is secure, well-lit, and monitored by CCTV or security patrols
