Police and Crime Commissioner Rupert Matthews has allocated funding through his new Prevent and Protect programme to provide additional home security for eligible households in hyper-local areas. Prevention is a "golden thread" running throughout the PCC's Police and Crime Plan, with a strong focus on tackling crime and anti-social behaviour that affects our neighbourhoods.
This new programme follows the success of the PCC’s Safer Streets Home Security events in 2024 in Melton and Oadby and Wigston, which were funded through the Home Office. Prevent and Protect will focus on hyper-local areas identified through police data. Eligible households can receive one free home security upgrade to help improve safety and deter crime.
Below you will find information relating to upcoming events, further information, frequently asked questions and our full eligibility criteria.
Households that meet the full eligibility criteria can receive one free home security upgrade. The items offered are:
Solar Security Wall Light | Defender Wi-Fi Camera | Defender Video Doorbell
Due to limited stock, we cannot guarantee the availability of a specific item. Distribution will operate on a first come, first served basis.

Information relating to upcoming Prevent and Protect Events. Please note the eligible postcode areas displayed for each event.
The first phase of Prevent and Protect will be held within the Charnwood Neighbourhood Policing Area (NPA). Prevent and Protect: Charnwood will deliver two public collection events to provide free home security upgrades to households within specified postcode areas.
Only one item may be collected per eligible household. Addresses will be checked on arrival to prevent duplicate collections. Households that have already received an item will be refused.
Note: You may collect an item on behalf of someone who meets the eligibility criteria. You must bring that person's ID and proof of address, such as a utility bill or council tax letter.
All items are subject to availability. You will be able to choose from the items available on the day. If your preferred item is no longer in stock, you will be offered an alternative.
The free security items are supplied by Solon Security. Product information and specifications for individual items can be found on the Solon Security website.
Solar Security Wall Light | Defender Wi-Fi Camera | Defender Video Doorbell
If you do not meet the eligibility criteria, you will not be able to receive a free home security item. This is because the items are limited and are being distributed within areas identified using police data.
Stock is limited for each event. If all items are allocated, we may close the event early. Any early closure due to stock running out will be clearly advertised at the collection site. Unfortunately, once stock has run out, no further items will be available and you will not be able to receive an item.
If you are unable to attend on the collection day, you will not be able to receive an item. Items are only available for collection at the advertised event, and there will be no alternative collection dates or arrangements.
However, you may nominate someone to collect on your behalf. They must bring the proof of address and identification of the person who lives at the eligible address (for example, your ID and proof of address), as outlined in the eligibility criteria section.
No. Only one item is available per eligible household. This is to ensure that as many households as possible can benefit from the scheme.
We expect wait times to vary throughout the day. At busier times, you may need to queue for a short while. Queues may be outside, so please dress appropriately and respect other attendees by queuing patiently.
When you reach the entrance, please have your documentation ready to help checks run quickly.
The collection process is as follows:
Queue at the entrance
Confirm eligibility with door staff
Sign in at the registration point, where we will check identification and proof of address, confirm eligibility, and take some basic details
Be directed to a collection point
Collect your item and exit
The process itself takes around 5 to 10 minutes. However, waiting times outside and inside may add to this.
If you are unable to stand for extended periods, please make a member of staff aware when you arrive. We will try to assist, but due to limited space and demand, we cannot guarantee priority access.
At registration, we will check identification and proof of address to confirm that you meet the eligibility criteria. We will also take some basic details to record that the item has been issued.
This helps ensure the scheme is delivered fairly, prevents duplicate collections, and allows items to be distributed in line with the eligibility requirements.
Details of parking availability will be provided on each individual event page.
Where free parking is not available on site, attendees will be responsible for making their own parking arrangements. Please ensure you park safely, considerately and legally at all times. Attendees are responsible for checking and complying with any parking restrictions, charges or time limits that may apply.
All items are provided brand new. If you believe your item is faulty or damaged, please speak to a member of staff at the event before leaving.
We are unable to offer replacements or exchanges once you have left the event due to limited stock availability.
All items are supplied by Solon Security, a leading UK supplier of high-quality crime prevention and community safety products.
The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner is not responsible for the installation, maintenance, or any ongoing costs associated with the item once it has been issued.
No. You may only attend the event dedicated to your postcode area. You will not be able to attend any other events, apart from the one advertised for your postcode.
For further information, please refer to the individual event page where full details are provided.
