Low Cost Intervention
Security lighting includes motion-activated, dusk-to-dawn and timer-controlled lights installed around residential properties. These systems deter burglars by increasing visibility, reducing hiding spots, and enhancing natural surveillance.
Timed lighting simulates occupancy, making homes appear lived-in even when vacant, which is especially effective in deterring opportunistic intruders.
Motion sensor lights: £90-£150 (installed)

Both timed and security lighting are a proven burglary deterrent. This follows the WIDE model (Window locks, Indoor lights, Door locks, External lights), where if employed, homes are 49x less likely to be burgled.
Improved lighting reduced property crime by 21% on average. A 16% drop in property crime and a 20% reduction in violent crime were observed after LED lighting upgrades.
Initiatives involving structural elements will need to be reviewed and approved by Highways, particularly if they impact public roads or pathways.
